US search engine giant Google is to cut Chinese technology firm Huawei's access to its hardware, software and technical services, leaving the company to rely on open-source versions of its popular Android phone operating system, the Reuters news agency reported.

The move will deny users of future Huawei smartphones access to popular Google apps such as YouTube and Gmail, as well as its Google Play store, according to media reports.

The move comes after US President Donald Trump added the Chinese company to an effective blacklist of firms that US businesses cannot trade with last week.

RTHK's economics correspondent, Barry Wood, said the move would make it difficult for Huawei to continue to compete in the West.

"I think it does suggest that things are going to be tough," he said. "We have to remember that Huawei's handset service has Europe as its number two market.

"If you can't get email, and you can't use YouTube and you can't use a Chrome operating system, this is going to be a problem. Still, it's early innings so we'll see how this plays out."
