Wall Street has slumped in the wake of remarks from President Donald Trump on the North Korean summit and trade talks with China.

The Dow Jones fell 0.7 percent to 24,834. The S&P 500 sank 0.3 percent to 2,724, and the Nasdaq lost 0.2 percent to finish at 7,378.

Trump raised the possibility a planned June summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un might not happen.

He also said he was not happy with trade talks with China, dampening enthusiasm among investors despite the truce declared over the weekend by Chinese and US officials in Washington.

Industrial stocks, which had lifted the Dow on Monday after benefitting from the apparently improving trade ties, dragged the benchmark index lower.

Markets have seesawed in recent days as US officials have veered from hardline to hopeful and back again. (AFP)
