President Xi Jinping has called on his US counterpart Joe Biden to demonstrate "political leadership" in improving bilateral ties.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Xi expressed hopes during a virtual meeting between the two leaders that Biden will demonstrate "political leadership" to bring the US policy towards China back to a "rational and practical" track.

Xi also highlighted mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation as three principles in developing China-US relations in the new era.

Xi likened China and the US to two giant ships sailing in the ocean that should not steer off course, or collide.

Xinhua also said Biden reaffirmed Washington's longstanding one-China policy and stated that the US does not support Taiwan independence.

According to a White House statement, Biden said the US is against "unilateral" efforts to change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. It also said the two leaders discussed Tibet, Xinjiang and Hong Kong.

The virtual meeting lasted more than three hours.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said Hong Kong is China's internal affairs, and other countries should not intervene.

Spokesman Zhao Lijian said China is against others using human rights to interfere with the country's domestic affairs.
