Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on Thursday registered for the Democratic Progressive Party's presidential primaries as she seeks to secure a second term in office.

She made the application just hours before leaving on a tour of three Pacific allies, which will also include a stopover in Hawaii.

Speaking to reporters after making her application, Tsai said she's the ideal person to take the island forward while overcoming both internal and external challenges.

One of her major contenders within the party will be former premier William Lai, who's a strong supporter of Taiwan independence.

The election will be held on January 11 next year.
