  • Three still missing at collapsed Foshan metro site

Rescue work was continuing at a Foshan subway rail site where a road cave-in killed eight workers on Wednesday night.

At least three people were still listed as missing, authorities said Thursday.

"A total of nine construction workers were rescued, and ... rescue and rehabilitation work is still underway," the statement said. It was unclear whether the dead and missing were all construction workers.

The site of the collapse was in a central area of the city in Guangdong province, beneath an eight-lane road. An area the size of two basketball courts sunk to a depth of six metres, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Pictures of the scene showed a huge swathe of mud and broken concrete in the middle of the thoroughfare in the city's Changcheng district.

The rail line under construction runs for 23 kilometers through the city north. The rapid expansion of subway networks in Chinese cities has frequently led to cave-ins and other deadly accidents.
