A fire that ripped through a residential building in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung on Sunday morning killed five members of a family – a couple and their three young children.

Local reports say the house that caught fire belonged to renowned Taiwanese cardiologist Lai Wen-de, who's a former president of Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital.

Dr Lai and his wife managed to flee the scene. Their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren – aged between two and five – died.

Firefighters believe an electrical fault might have caused the deadly blaze.
