High-level advisors in Beijing say Sino-US relations are at a critical point - and have called for expanded cooperation.

Guo Weimin, the spokesman for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, says good progress has been made at the trade talks between Beijing and Washington.

The representative of the country's top advisory body was speaking before the conference starts its annual meeting in the capital on Sunday.

When asked what concessions China is ready to make to diffuse the trade tension with the US, Guo simply called for greater co-operation between the two sides.

“We both gain from co-operation and lose from confrontation... it falls on both sides to work together towards this end”, he said.

While Beijing has welcomed a decision by Washington to delay a steep rise in tariffs on a range of Chinese products, it has not responded to a later tweet from President Trump who requested China to remove all tariffs on US agricultural products.

During the press conference, Guo also said the CPPCC will continue to promote the Greater Bay Area outline development plan - which was released by the central government last month to boost integration between Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong.
