Shanghai Cases Stay High, Guangzhou Shuts Schools

As Shanghai continues to battle a high number of Covid-19 infections, new cases emerging in Guangzhou have prompted local authorities to suspend in-person classes.

Shanghai on Monday reported over 26,000 new local Covid cases – among them 914 were symptomatic and 25,173 were asymptomatic.

The city’s been under lockdowns since late March, but its infections still take up the bulk of the mainland’s daily tally.

Nationwide, 1,164 local symptomatic infections were reported for the day, that’s a slight drop from 1,318 the day before.

Asymptomatic cases across the mainland had risen to 26,345, from 25,037 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Guangzhou also logged 27 new local infections, most of which were symptomatic.

Primary and secondary schools in the city suspended in-person classes for a week from Monday.

Residents have also been banned from leaving Guangzhou unless necessary, and those who do leave have to show a negative result from a PCR test taken within 48 hours.

Authorities have also put some neighbourhoods under lockdown, with residents either required to stay at home or be confined within their community.

A resident living in the Tianhe district told RTHK that supermarkets are still open despite the closure of some shopping malls and bars, but there are very few vehicles and people on the streets.

The man said he has bought food to last two to three days, in case there is a lockdown.

A Hongkonger surnamed Wong, who is in a Guangzhou neighbourhood under Covid restrictions, said only supermarkets, markets and pharmacies are still open in the area.
