  • Shanghai at centre of Omicron-fuelled outbreaks

The National Health Commission (NHC) on Sunday reported 1,217 locally transmitted Covid cases, most of them in the northeast province of Jilin.

That's similar to Saturday's figure, but the number of reported asymptomatic infections continues to climb, and now puts Shanghai at the centre of the Omicron wave.

The NHC also reported on Sunday that 4,333 people on the mainland had tested positive for Covid-19 without showing any symptoms.

Shanghai accounted for the vast majority of those cases. Asymptomatic infections uncovered in the commercial hub rose by more than 400 from Saturday to 2,631.

The Heath Commission also confirmed 47 locally-transmitted cases in the city.

More than 1,070 locally acquired infections were recorded in Jilin, which also reported 1,007 local asymptomatic cases.

Hundreds of other infections were also recorded in Fujian, Hebei, Liaoning, Tianjin and Henan.

Shanghai has now confirmed around 10,000 coronavirus infections in the past three weeks, most of them asymptomatic, putting pressure on the city's health system.

Some hospitals have been shut down daily for disinfection, following positive tests among patients and staff.
