The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress has passed a series of amendments to the National Flag and National Emblem Law, which mainland officials say is meant to further protect the integrity of the national symbols.

According to the revised set of legislation – which will take effect on January 1 – those who intentionally burn, mutilate, paint, deface or trample the flag and emblem in public will be investigated for criminal responsibility.

It also states that that national flag must not be discarded, displayed upside down or used in any manner that impairs its dignity.

The legislation will apply to offices in Hong Kong and Macau that are set up by the central government.

In a statement, the SAR government said it will introduce amendments to the local National Flag and National Emblem Ordinance by implementing provisions that are applicable to the territory.

Hong Kong’s sole delegate to the NPCSC, Tam Yiu-chung, said he believes the revised laws will help promote patriotism. (Additional reporting by AP)
