  • New envoy seeks to improve China-US ties

China's new ambassador to the United States has urged Washington to work with Beijing to enhance dialogue and manage their differences, so as to bring bilateral relations back to the right track.

Xie Feng, a career diplomat with extensive experience in Washington, arrived in New York on Tuesday, Beijing's embassy in the US said in a statement.

He replaces Qin Gang, who left his post earlier this year to serve as foreign minister.

"As a representative of the Chinese people, I have come here to safeguard the interests of China, and I take this as my sacred responsibility. As an envoy of the Chinese people, I have come here to enhance China-US exchanges and cooperation, and I take this as my important mission," Xie told reporters at the airport.

"At present, the China-US relationship is faced with serious difficulties and challenges. My appointment means to me not only honour, but also enormous responsibilities. My colleagues and I will carry out our responsibilities and live up to our mission with diligence and fortitude."

The US ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, said he had held a "farewell dinner" with Xie "as we manage the ever-challenging US-China relationship".

"I look forward to working with him in his new role," Burns said on Twitter. (Xinhua/Reuters)
