Macau officials said on Sunday that police have arrested 11 people in connection with a money laundering and illegal gambling case.

They said those detained include a 47-year-old businessman, surnamed Chau, but stopped short of revealing if the suspect was Alvin Chau, the head of junket operator Suncity Group.

Investigators said they received tip-offs in 2019 about a junket company operating an illegal gambling platform for mainland members and launched an official investigation in April last year.

A mainland court on Friday issued a warrant for Alvin Chau, accusing him of leading a group to set up illegal casinos on the mainland.

Separately, Suncity Group said in a statement to the Stock Exchange that the media reports of a police investigation referred to a personal matter and did not affect the company's business.
