Authorities in Macau are planning to gradually re-open schools, after a closure of more than two months because of Covid-19.

Officials said on Sunday they are planning to send senior secondary school students back first -- starting on May 4. Junior secondary school students should follow a week later.

They say arrangements for younger children will depend on how the outbreak evolves. Authorities suggest kindergartens and special schools may not re-open for the remainder of this academic year.

The authorities called on students who are in Macau not to travel elsewhere, and cross-border students to fulfil clearance requirements and get ready for class resumption.

Macau has not reported a coronavirus case for 11 straight days. It has reported 45 confirmed cases since late January, with 17 patients recovering from the virus.

Hong Kong has not announced when schools will resume, while the Diploma of Secondary Education for secondary-school leavers will begin on April 24.
