The Xinjiang authority announced on Sunday night that the number of asymptomatic coronavirus carriers identified in Kashgar jumped to 138, a day after it reported the first such case in months.

All the new cases were people with linkages to an industrial area where the parents of the first patient worked.

On Saturday, a 17-year-old girl in a village in Kashgar was found to have the virus during a regular inspection, the Xinjiang health commission had said earlier.

Authorities said they have identified 137 cases through contact tracing and have sent medic professionals to the area to monitor the situation.

The government had earlier said all schools in the city will be closed this week although places like supermarkets and shopping malls will remain open.

Xinjiang was the site of a local cluster in August, but no new cases had been found in the region since August 15.
