  • Huge crowds swamp Covid testing sites in Guangzhou

Authorities in Guangzhou on Thursday reminded residents of the need for social distancing after huge crowds turned up for coronavirus tests.

More than a million residents in Liwan district have been ordered to get tested for Covid since infections were found in the area.

Officials said more staff would be deployed to around 200 temporary testing stations set up at shopping malls, sports centres and residential estates. People were advised to go to the testing stations according to their scheduled appointments to avoid overcrowding.

Queues also appeared at vaccination centres as people flocked to get inoculated.

Health authorities sought to allay people’s concerns, saying they had adequate supplies of vaccine.

In Hong Kong, the Centre for Health Protection reported no new Covid cases.

Officials also confirmed that a nurse who previously tested positive for coronavirus was not actually infected.

Test results showed that traces of the virus in her upper respiratory tract actually came from the Sinovac jab she was working with.
