Cindy Sui talks to RTHK's AnneMarie Evans

A Hong Kong couple have been killed in the large earthquake in Taiwan earlier this week, despite rescuers who were searching for them reporting earlier on Friday that they had found signs of life.

Peter and Freda So, both 49, had travelled to the island on Canadian passports.

The husband and wife had been staying at an apartment block which partially collapsed following the 6.4-magnitude quake in the eastern tourist city of Hualien on Tuesday night.

Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that the couple's deaths had been confirmed after their bodies were removed from the building and taken to a mortuary.

Five mainland tourists were also believed to be trapped in the rubble of the same building which is now tilting dangerously. Reports from Taiwan now say they have also perished.

Taiwan journalist Cindy Sui told RTHK's AnneMarie Evans that rescuers struggled to reach the Hong Kong couple, having to drill through a floor to get into the room.

In all, 17 people are now thought to have died in the quake.
