Guangzhou officials on Tuesday announced that the city added 10 symptomatic Covid-19 cases and another three infections without symptoms.

Authorities said the new infections were linked to previous cases with clear transmission chains.

“The epidemic situation is controllable in general,” said Chen Bin, a deputy director of the Guangzhou Health Commission.

Officials said the upcoming few days will be critical to contain the outbreak and they will conduct tests in different areas to pick up any undiscovered infections.

The additional cases brought the total number of infections in the southern Chinese city since last Friday to 74.

Primary and secondary schools have switched their classes online for a week since Monday, as local officials try to cut transmission.

Residents have also been ordered to avoid leaving the city and some neighbourhoods have come under lockdown.

Officials said state-owned enterprises have been working to ensure that supermarkets and shops are sufficiently stocked.
