  • Covid cases in Shanghai rise amid lockdowns

Covid-19 cases in Shanghai continued to rise in Wednesday, as the city reported 326 cases of people displaying symptoms and 5,656 asymptomatic infections.

That compares to 96 symptomatic cases and 4,381 asymptomatic ones on Tuesday.

Pudong continues to see the most infections.

The financial district is in the area of the city east of the Huangpu River, which was locked down on Monday for four days for mass testing in a bid to contain the Omicron-driven wave in Shanghai.

The rest of the city west of the river, Puxi, will be subject to the same restrictions from Friday.

Shanghai health authorities said it had conducted nearly 20 million PCR and antigen tests in the past couple of days.

They said “a number of abnormal cases” were identified, and this showed the mass testing exercise had been key in cutting transmission chains and curbing the epidemic.

The record number of new infections in Shanghai pushed the total number of daily local asymptomatic cases on the mainland up to 7,090 on Wednesday.

The National Health Commission also reported 1,565 symptomatic infections in other parts of the country – nearly three quarters of them in Jilin province.

Guangdong confirmed 13 symptomatic infections and 14 asymptomatic cases.
