  • Chinese-Australian journalist Cheng Lei goes on trial

Former CGTN presenter Cheng Lei went on trial on Thursday on charges of providing state secrets to a foreign country.

The hearing for the Chinese-born Australian journalist was held in a court in Beijing behind closed doors.

Cheng, 46, was detained in August 2020 and formally arrested last year.

Australia's ambassador to China, Graham Fletcher, tried to attend the hearing but was told it was not open to visitors because the case involved state secrets.

It's not immediately known how long the trial will last, or when a verdict will be handed down. (Additional reporting by Reuters)
