China and the United States said they conducted "candid, in-depth and constructive communication" over bilateral relations as well as international issues such as Ukraine on Monday.

Yang Jiechi, a Politburo member and director of the Foreign Affairs Commission, met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Rome.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the two sides exchanged views on Ukraine, the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, Iran and Afghanistan.

Yang said the international community should support talks between Russia and Ukraine and efforts to de-escalate the crisis.

He also said China is firmly against attempts to spread disinformation over Beijing's role in the conflict. (Additional reporting by Xinhua)
