China is banning non-Chinese travellers from entering the country from Britain and Belgium, even if they hold valid visas or residence permits, citing the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chinese embassies in the United Kingdom and Belgium said on their websites that those holding diplomatic, official and courtesy visas will not be affected, adding that anyone with special urgent needs to visit China could apply for a visa at the embassies.

China said it has no choice but to impose what it said would be a temporary measure, adding it will make adjustments in accordance with the latest developments.

Europe is struggling to counter a second wave of coronavirus infections. A month-long lockdown is now in effect in Britain as it grapples with a surge in cases.

In March, China had barred entry of all foreigners, but eased the ban in September when it allowed those with valid residence permits to enter.
