Supporters of the late Nobel Peace laureate, Liu Xiaobo, on Sunday called on mainland authorities to immediately release his widow, Liu Xia, on her 57th birthday.

Liu Xia has been under house arrest for eight years - ever since her late husband won the Nobel prize.

Liu Xiaobo's supporters said in an online statement that the authorities should respect Liu's civil rights, and allow her to move freely, and even go overseas.

They said her isolation since the death of Mr Liu last July is similar to imprisonment and little news about her is made public.
