Pro-Beijing legal scholar Albert Chen on Tuesday called Sunday's attacks on people by a group of armed men at Yuen Long MTR station as a "most severe challenge to the rule of law".
In a statement, the Basic Law Committee member said the attacks have angered virtually everyone and the police's inability to enforce the law has also come under severe criticism.
Chen said people's personal safety is now at risk due to political reasons, and Hongkongers are all saddened by the clashes between anti-extradition protesters and the police over the past few weeks.
He said society and the One Country, Two System arrangement is now facing unprecedented challenges.
Chen urged people from both sides of the political divide to find common ground, to say no to violence, and to work together to safeguard Hong Kong's core values.
