Legal sector legislator Dennis Kwok

Legal sector lawmaker Dennis Kwok has rallied support for the pro-democracy camp ahead of the upcoming Legislative Council elections, saying that if his camp wins more than 35 seats, they can defend the interests of Hong Kong people.

Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, the Civic Party lawmaker said he can foresee more legislative proposals that go against Hong Kong people's values and wishes - citing the ill-fated extradition bill that the SAR government tried to push though last year, and the authorities' attempt to enact national security laws in 2003.

He described Article 23 Legislation as "a ticking time bomb".

Kwok said pro-Beijing politicians feel they can "ignore the voice of the Hong Kong people" - as they did last year when more than a million people marched in the streets against the resumption of the second reading of the Extradition Bill.

He urged people to get out and vote so that the pro-democracy camp can reclaim the power of veto on behalf of the people of Hong Kong, and that all they need is a simple majority of 35 seats or more to achieve that goal.

Kwok pointed out that democratic lawmakers and pro-democracy election committee members will then make up a significant portion in the Chief Executive election committee and then, as he put it, they can "beat them at their own game".
