The observatory has issued a warning to the public saying intense gusts reaching 80 kilometres per hour or above may affect Hong Kong as the city was lashed by heavy rain from the morning.

Pictures circulating on social media showed a waterspout rising in the Chek Lap Kok area at around 10am.

The weathermen advised people to be aware of flying debris and falling objects and said drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to intense gusts.

The observatory said a low pressure trough will continue to affect southern China and occasional heavy showers over the region are expected.

Heavy rain had lashed the city from the morning and alerts about flash floods in low lying areas were issued.

The Highways Department confirmed that water seepage were found in several locations of the Central-Wanchai Bypass due to recent heavy rain. A spokesman said the leaks were found in the plant room and administration building.
