The Consumer Council said on Thursday that it had tested 10 commonly available travel adapters on sale in Hong Kong and found that none of them were safe enough.

The products included adapters that cost between HK$78 and HK$460, and had plug pins that can be used in various countries.

The watchdog found a series of common defects in the products it tested, including insufficient insulation, plug pins not up to international standards and missing warning labels.

It said one adapter, which carried no brand name, could cause electric shocks. The watchdog has passed details of that case to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department for follow-up action.

The council’s Chief Executive, Gilly Wong, advised people to make sure their devices are safe by checking whether they overheat when used, and she said extra attention should be paid to a product's design and its labels.
