Eastern Court on Monday sentenced a warehouse worker to three months in prison after finding him guilty of possessing a weapon, namely a laser pointer, during a protest.

But Cheung Ming-hei, 28, was released on bail, after his lawyer indicated his plan to appeal against the conviction.

The court had been told during the trial that Cheung shone a laser pointer at police officers for a total of 40 seconds during an anti-government protest in Central in November last year.

Magistrate Peony Wong ruled that Cheung had deliberately used the green light mode of the device to "attack" the officers, although she also noted the device was not a very powerful one and no one was hurt.

The magistrate also ruled that the two policemen who identified Cheung as the suspect were honest and reliable witnesses.
