Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on the United States to respect the SAR government's efforts to clamp down on violent protests, and to stop interfering in China's affairs.

In an address on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York, Wang said the US and China need to stick to the principles of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

He said the two countries must respect each other’s territorial sovereignty, social systems and development paths, and not attempt to impose their will on each other.

Wang said China never interferes in America's business and he would like to see the US adopt the same attitude.

He said that in order to maintain Hong Kong’s prosperity, it is necessary for the SAR government to stop the current violence and restore order.

Wang was responding to earlier comments by US President Donald Trump at the assembly.

Trump had said his administration is carefully monitoring the anti-government protests in Hong Kong, and that Beijing must honour the Sino-British Joint Declaration and protect the territory's freedoms and rule of law.
