Sources have told RTHK that the SAR government will add the UK to a list of high-risk countries, which would make travellers from there take Covid-19 test within 72 hours before boarding flights to Hong Kong.

They must also have a hotel booking for 14 days here where they are supposed to stay in quarantine.

It’s understood that the government will make an announcement later on Thursday at the earliest, and the restrictions on travellers from the UK are expected to take effect next Thursday.

Currently, passengers from ten countries are already subject to these rules. They are Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Africa and the US.

The news comes after it was reported that the number of new Covid-19 cases in the UK have soared in recent days, with authorities there reporting more than 6,000 new cases on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, sources have also said that the city would report seven new coronavirus cases on Thursday.

The Centre for Health Protection reported three new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases in Hong Kong to 5,049.
