  • UK says it will talk to partners in UN over HK law

British foreign minister Dominic Raab said on Tuesday that Britain would raise Beijing's adoption of national security legislation for Hong Kong with "likeminded partners" in the United Nations Human Rights Council.

"We've been working very closely with our international partners, with the EU, the G7 and indeed we are raising the issue with likeminded partners in the United Nations Human Rights Council shortly," he told parliament.

"The success of Hong Kong ... has been built on its autonomy in the 'One Country, Two Systems paradigm. This clearly is at threat if China as we now fear has enacted the legislation."

Raab also said that the UK fully intends to see through its offer of a "pathway to citizenship" for BN(O) passport holders in Hong Kong.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain will decide after studying the new law.

"We will be looking at the law very carefully, and we will want to scrutinise it properly to understand whether it is in conflict with the Joint Declaration between the UK and China," Johnson told reporters.

"And we will be setting out our response in due course." (Reuters)
