In a video released by mainland police, Simon Cheng said he was "ashamed" of his actions and promised not to commit similar offences again.

A former British consulate staff member in Hong Kong, Simon Cheng, says he's been given political asylum by the British government. He said he can stay in the UK for five years and apply for citizenship after that.

Cheng had claimed he was tortured by mainland police in Shenzhen who wanted information about the anti-government protests in Hong Kong last year. Mainland police said he was detained for paying for sex.

Cheng said he believed he would be accused, under the new security law, of colluding with foreign forces and that he would be sent to the mainland for trial if he returned to Hong Kong.
