Former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa was forced to cut short his trip to the capital over the weekend after coming down with an ‘acute urinary problem’.
Tung, the vice chairman of China's top advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), was in Beijing on Sunday to receive a prestigious national medal from President Xi Jinping for "his great contributions to the One Country, Two System's principle".
He is the first person from Hong Kong to be given the honour.
But shortly after the ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday, Tung flew back to Hong Kong as he felt unwell, according to his spokesman.
He spent two nights at a hospital and was discharged on Tuesday.
