A 38-year-old man and his 70-year-old mother were rescued on Wednesday morning after being trapped while camping overnight, when the tropical storm Higos buffeted Hong Kong with high velocity winds.
The observatory had issued a No 1 signal early Tuesday and raised it to No 3 by afternoon. The alert level had to be raised to No 9 overnight as Higos swished past the city, as winds picked up force.
Police told RTHK that the duo, who had gone camping, called emergency services around 7am to say they were trapped, but uninjured. But the mother did report feeling cold and having spells of dizziness.
Emergency services were unable to deploy helicopters due to bad weather so the rescue team had to hike up to the spot.
Rescuers hiked up a hill at Tap Mun in the Sai Kung country park, after receiving a report around 7am that the two were trapped on a peak and their camping supplies had been blown away.
The pair were escorted down by 9am and the woman was given some medical treatment.
Media report said the son had gone camping on Friday and his mother joined him on Tuesday.
But the police were not able to give more details like how many rescuers were involved and how long it took them to locate the duo.
