The driver of a tram that overturned in Central last year has been sentenced to 11 months in jail for causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving.

He has also been disqualified from driving any type of vehicle for two years.

Eleven passengers were injured – two seriously – when the tram travelling along Des Voeux Road Central tipped over outside HSBC's headquarters in April last year.

The District Court heard how Lo Chi-leung was speeding at about twice the 15 kilometres per hour limit because he wanted to go home sooner.

Passing sentence, District Court Judge Tam Sze-lok described the driving of the defendant as “reckless".

He said the 24-year-old was lucky that there was no loss of life in the accident, though his action did expose passengers to “shock and terror”.

The judge also said a deterrent sentence was needed to remind people of the importance of safe driving.
