  • Too many cough drops 'cause other health problems'

The consumer watchdog on Monday warned members of the public about taking an excessive amount of cough drops, which are often high in sugar and could cause problems such as mouth pain and breathing difficulties.

Of the 41 throat lozenges tested, the Consumer Council found two containing a bactericidal anti-infective that could cause tongue or mouth pain for anyone who took more than eight tablets in a day.

And four products contained ingredients that could cause stomach discomfort, facial swelling and breathing problems if taken in excess.

The watchdog also highlighted the sugar levels of cough drops.

It said for some items, people taking six tablets would reach one-third of their recommended daily intake.

The watchdog’s spokeswoman, Nora Tam, says consumers shouldn't rely too much on cough drops.

“After you eat it, you might feel better, because it really sooth your throat a little bit, but it doesn’t cure the problem… You must go and consult your doctor, rather than delay treating your problem,” she said.
