Democratic Party legislator Lam Cheuk-ting has urged the Housing Department to conduct a thorough check on all flats at a new public housing estate in Sheung Shui after multiple tenants reported finding worms in their toilets.
Lam told reporters that he has already received 12 complaints from residents living in two of the three blocks in the Po Shek Wu Estate since Wednesday last week.
Lam was accompanied by a resident of one of the blocks called Tsz Jing House. He told reporters that he moved into the block in December and noticed dark spots in the toilet shortly after he and his family moved in.
He tried to clean the toilet repeatedly by pouring detergent into the toilet and flushing, but the worms kept reappearing.
He said the problem is troubling, adding that his children are now afraid of using the toilet.
Lam believed the scale of the problem may be more serious than he thought because the complainants came from different floors, and urged officials to find the source of the infestation.
In response, the Housing Department said it has received seven complaints so far and will continue to pursue the matter.
A spokesman said they had already inspected the potable and flushing water tanks at one building and couldn't find signs of worms there.
