Hong Kong's biggest police association has urged officers to consider firing live rounds at any anti-government protesters throwing Molotov cocktails at them.
Protesters threw the weapons towards the police multiple times on Sunday, and in some instances, they hurled them directly at officers.
Although it's not thought any officers were actually hit by a Molotov cocktail, the Junior Police Officers' Association says the weapons can be deadly and therefore justify a tougher response than firing tear gas, rubber bullets or bean bag rounds.
A statement issued by the group on Monday said if officers face life-threatening danger they should decisively use reasonable and appropriate force to protect themselves and others. It said live ammunition should be considered.
The association also condemned "rioters" for their organised use of Molotov cocktails and accused them of attacking members of the public who hold opposing views.
