Thousands of people have filled Tamar Park to take part in a "Safeguard Hong Kong" rally, organised by pro-establishment figures.

The crowds converged on the park, near the Legislative Council and government complex, heeding a call by organisers to dress in white, and not cover their faces with masks or helmets.

Demonstrators held up placards, and chanted slogans like "support police", and "safeguard Hong Kong."

Various speakers, including former Justice Secretary Elsie Leung and a deputy director of Beijing's Basic Law Committee, Maria Tam, took turn to address the crowd on a main stage.

One speaker, who addressed the crowds in English, said “Hong Kong is the city of harmony and peace, so we want to keep this peace any way.”

“I am requesting all parties sit together and find the problem, and let us live in peace. Do not destroy Hong Kong,” he said to cheers from the crowd.
