Thousands of anti-extradition protesters are marching from Causeway Bay to Central in spite of a police ban. Barricades have been set up and pro-democracy slogans are being broadcast through a loudhailer that has been set up in the area.
Riot police are on stand-by at Causeway Bay MTR station, and the nearby Sogo, Hysan and World Trade Centre shopping malls have closed.
Shopping malls have been the scene of protests, or even clashes, involving anti-extradition protesters and pro-government supporters, with over 20 people being injured on Saturday in fighting at a Kowloon Bay mall. Causeway Bay has also been the scene of several clashes between the pro-democracy protesters and riot police and tear gas has been used there on many occasions.
Police last week banned the planned march by the Civil Human Rights Front. The ban was upheld by an appeals board on Friday and the front pulled out.
But the protesters appear to have answered online calls for people to instead "go for a stroll" from East Point Road in Causeway Bay to Chater Garden in Central.
Shortly after the march began, police put out a statement saying those protesters were taking part in an unauthorised assembly. They appealed to members of the public to leave immediately.
