The Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng, has defended the Justice Department's handling of the extradition saga and called for an end to the violence.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday before a visit to Shanghai, Cheng said there was no pressure brought to bear on the Department of Justice's decisions on whether to prosecute.
And asked why no one has been prosecuted over last month's gang attacks in Yuen Long, Cheng said she would not comment on individual cases.
But she said the prosecution process largely depended on the complexity of the case and on the amount of evidence.
Cheng also said she hoped for an end to the violence would end and the restoration of public order.
She said the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, has done her best to respond to the public's demands - even though that may not satisfy some people.
She said the government would continue to listen to the views of the public and will stay more in tune with public opinion in the future.
