There were tense scenes near Chater Garden when anti-extradition protesters were staging a rally on Sunday afternoon. A group was locked in a standoff with the police.
Police who arrived at the scene drew angry chants from protesters.
Officers say they were here to investigate other cases, but were quickly surrounded by demonstrators.
The rally at Chater Garden was approved by the police, but a march to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park has been banned.
Protesters have now begun marching on Queensway towards Wan Chai.
