Democratic Party legislator Ted Hui has hit out at the Chief Executive Carrie Lam's plan to defuse the anti-extradition crisis through, what he described as, a staged dialogue with community leaders.

Speaking on RTHK's "Letter to Hong Kong", he said the five demands of the protesters are clear and have been so for months.

"It is not through her proposed staged-dialogue with community leaders, professionals and academics. Listening and hearing are two different things,' Hui said.

"For the past three months, the demands of Hong Kong people have already been out in the open – no more dialogue is needed. We are all just waiting for her concrete actions towards the five key demands, not one less".

The government has already given in to one of the demands, namely the withdrawal of the extradition bill. The protesters also want a Commission of Inquiry into alleged police brutality, an amnesty for those arrested, the removal of the classification of the protesters as "rioters" and universal suffrage.

And in an appeal to the international community, Hui said it was this desire for freedom and democracy that was driving the protests, not secession and violence.

"Now it is my turn to ask the world to see Hong Kong clearly. I am asking the world to help us uplift the core goals of this movement. We are not rioters, nor independence seekers, nor violence makers," he said.

"I urge the world to lift the deceptive veil Beijing has been trying to put on Hong Kong. Please know that freedom and democracy are the only things Hong Kong people are asking for. Is that too much to ask?"
