  • Tear gas isn't killing off police dogs, force says

Police dismissed on Thursday what they called “unverified rumours” that some police dogs felt unwell and even died after they were deployed during recent anti-government protests where tear gas had been fired.

This comes after a group of animal lovers protested outside the police's headquarters in Wan Chai on Wednesday saying the force may be guilty of animal cruelty, because unlike officers and many of the protesters, the dogs don't wear any protective gear.

"Please rest assured that no police dog has passed away or felt unwell as a result of handling protests since June. We understand public concern about police dogs’ health so every handler takes good care of his or her partner," the force said in a Facebook post.

Health Secretary Sophia Chan also said she believes police officers would look after their dogs well.

“I’m sure the police will take care of those dogs that they bring along for their work. If they have any problems or questions, they can contact the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for further communication,” she said.
