Police fired tear gas at protesters who blocked roads in Tseung Kwan O late on Tuesday night, as tensions rise in the area after a University of Science and Technology student suffered life-threatening injuries there in the early hours of Monday.

Dozens of people used railings to set up makeshift barricades close to the Kwong Ming and Sheung Tak estates, chanting slogans. Some threw objects at police officers as local councillors and estate officials attempted to calm the situation.

After issuing the black warning flag, police deployed several rounds of tear gas shortly after 11pm. Footage showed large numbers of riot police on the scene. They returned with more rounds of tear gas after midnight, before seemingly backing off.

At least one petrol bomb was thrown by protesters. Most of the police left the area just before 2am.

The protest was in response to severe injuries suffered by a 22-year-old HKUST student who fell from height at a car park in the Sheung Tak Estate as police fired tear gas in the area in the early hours of Monday.

The man remained in a critical condition in hospital on Tuesday. The police on Tuesday denied allegations that officers had pushed the student off the car park or had delayed the arrival of medical help.
