A 19-year-old man who is alleged to have killed his girlfriend in Taiwan has been remanded in custody by Kwun Tong Magistracy.
Rather than murder, he is charged with stealing money and other property belonging to the dead woman.
The prosecution alleges that the defendant, Chan Tong-kai, used the bank card of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Poon Hiu-wing, twice in Diamond Hill to withdraw HK$18,500. He was also allegedly in possession of her phone, camera, and NT$20,000 in cash.
Chan is facing two counts of theft and one count of handling stolen goods. No plea was entered, and he did not apply for bail. He is scheduled to appear before the court again on April 12.
The man had travelled with his girlfriend to Taiwan last month but came back alone, and the body of the woman was found in New Taipei on Tuesday.
But the alleged murder was not mentioned in court on Thursday. Since there's no extradition agreement between Hong Kong and Taiwan, authorities have yet to decide on how to handle the alleged murder.
