The Hong Kong Observatory says it expects to issue the No. 8 signal at or before 5:20pm on Tuesday as severe tropical storm Kompasu nears the SAR.
At 3pm, Kompasu was about 500 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong, and was forecast to move west at about 25 kilometres an hour across the northern part of the South China Sea towards the vicinity of Hainan.
The observatory expects the weather to worsen significantly later on Tuesday.
