Eastern Court has denied bail to a 19-year-old man charged with attacking a mainland reporter at the airport during an anti-extradition protest last Tuesday.

The defendant, Lai Yun-long, faces charges of unlawful assembly, wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The alleged attack happened when thousands of anti-extradition protesters occupied the airport in an attempt to paralyse operations there.

Some protesters surrounded the reporter, Fu Guohao, who – it was later found out – works for state-controlled media Global Times, and stopped him from leaving the airport amid chaotic scenes.

Media reports also showed Fu’s hands being tied with plastic straps.

No plea was entered, and the case was adjourned to October 28 for further police investigation.
