A Hong Kong survey of men who have sex with men (MSM) suggests around one in 15 are infected with HIV, a record high since the study began in 2006.

Four thousand men were questioned for the survey by the Centre For Health Protection.

A consultant at the centre, Dr Kenny Chan, said only half of the respondents said they used condoms every time they had sex.

Chan said health authorities would now step up their efforts to encourage safe sex among the MSM community.

"This figure probably is an all-time high among this community, of men who have sex with men. The last similar study that was done in 2011 was about four percent. It's now 6.54 percent, so it's a rise and it's a very unwelcome rise," Chan said.

"We are going to observe this very closely and further promotion of safer sex among this community is going to be very important."
