Four University of Hong Kong students charged with advocating terrorism have been remanded in custody after their court appearance on Thursday.
The suspects, aged 18 to 20, have been accused of contravening Article 27 of the national security law on July 7. The charge is said to be related to a motion passed by the university's student union council mourning a man who stabbed a police officer before killing himself on July 1 and thanking his "sacrifice".
The West Kowloon Court granted bail to one of the suspects, former student representative Anthony Yung, but prosecutors immediately said they would review the bail decision and Yung was remanded in custody.
The other defendants – council chairman Kinson Cheung, former student union president Charles Kwok and former student representative Chris Todorovski – were denied bail.
The four also face an alternative charge of incitement to wound with intent, with prosecutors alleging that they had incited others to unlawfully and maliciously wound police officers to cause grievous bodily harm.
The case was adjourned to September 14.
