  • Student guidance teachers fear for their jobs

Lila Ho talks to RTHK's Joanne Wong

A group of more than 70 school counsellors on Wednesday urged the government not to make them redundant when social workers are appointed in primary schools as envisaged in the last budget.

The government move is to appoint one social worker at every primary school from next year, to help deal with child abuse cases.

But staff who are now employed as student guidance teachers fear that the government will cut their roles when this is implemented.

The teachers say they should be allowed to stay on and they could work hand in hand with the social workers.

Lila Ho, a member of the alliance, said newly appointed social workers will take time to get to know the students, while they have been already doing this.

She told RTHK's Joanne Wong that students should be given the benefit of getting help from both the guidance teachers and social workers.
